SAFER CYCLING LINK BETWEEN FOOTSCRAY AND MELBOURNE CBD
People cycling across Melbourne’s west will now benefit from a safer journey between Footscray and the CBD following the completion of a shared use path thanks to the Andrews Government.
Member for Footscray Katie Hall today opened new shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians on Dynon Road which connect Footscray to North Melbourne and the Melbourne CBD.
The $6 million project includes a two-way cycling path and a footpath between the Maribyrnong Street and Kensington Road intersection and new shared path to Highett Street linking with an existing shared path to North Melbourne.
Raised pedestrian crossings have been added to the Dynon Road and Sims Street intersection and pedestrian operated signals near Maribyrnong Street allowing safe access onto Dynon Road.
New line marking, additional signage and green pavement at intersections will improve the visibility of the shared paths and extended kerbs will make it easier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the road.
There will be further benefits for cyclists in Melbourne west with the West Gate Tunnel Project.
A new pedestrian and cycling bridge at Dynon Road will make it safer and easier to cross Moonee Ponds Creek and the rail lines separating cars and bikes on Dynon Road.
This is part of more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded cycling and walking paths being built in the west as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project which will provide quicker, safer and better connections.
A 2.5 kilometre express cycling veloway, suspended under the elevated road along Footscray Road, will give commuter cyclists an express route to and from the city, completely separated from traffic.
The popular Federation Trail cycle path will also be completed, providing a continuous journey from Werribee to the city.
