CELEBRATING PROGRESS ON STONY CREEK REHABILITATION

Significant progress has been made as part of the Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan to restore, revitalise and protect this important urban waterway.

Local Member for Footscray Katie Hall visited the project site and updated the community on the status and progress of the 52 actions within the 2021-2022 Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan annual report card.

The report highlights key actions delivered last year. These include new infrastructure such as toilets, barbeques and footbridges, community engagement, and trialling a new network of water quality sensors allowing the EPA to respond to pollution immediately.

Important research is also underway to find new ways to manage creek contaminants and to recognise the types of litter affecting the waterways.

The Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan was established in 2019 after a fire broke out in a warehouse in August 2018 in the industrial precinct of Tottenham, resulting in widespread water contamination.

A Stakeholder Advisory Group was established to manage and deliver the Plan including representatives from Maribyrnong City Council, EPA Victoria, Melbourne Water and the local community. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029.
